The Journey of a Stylist at Dress for Success Montreal

My volunteer journey with Dress for Success Montreal began in 2019 following a Beauty Camp event our Young Professionals group had organized. During the event, we asked participants to bring donations and share their reasons for giving back. This inspired us to find a meaningful way to contribute not just our possessions, but also our time—our most precious resource.

When we discovered Dress for Success, its mission immediately resonated with us: empowering women in need to thrive by providing professional attire, a supportive network, and development tools. Among the various volunteer opportunities—from board membership to public speaking programs—I chose to become a stylist. I wanted direct, personal connections with the women who came to the boutique, to witness their transformation firsthand.

I initially approached this role with trepidation. While I enjoyed shopping and had helped friends with their wardrobes, working with strangers felt intimidating. Would my fashion sense measure up? Would I be able to create looks these women would feel confident in? Fortunately, we received training that emphasized treating clients with sensitivity and respect, particularly around delicate topics like clothing sizes.

The boutique operated entirely on volunteer availability, teaching me valuable lessons about commitment and responsibility. We carefully selected shifts we could reliably attend, understanding that clients—women referred by partner organizations helping people secure employment—depended on us to prepare for their job interviews or first days at work.

During styling sessions, I developed active listening skills that transformed my perspective. I learned to set aside my personal preferences and truly understand each woman's unique style and needs. This growth was evident when I worked with a Muslim client wearing a hijab—initially, I reached for earrings before realizing I needed to focus on clothing that would complement her head coverings instead.

One encounter particularly moved me: a woman who hadn't owned nice clothing in 15 years expressed how our service restored her dignity, self-confidence, and sense of womanhood. The joy my friend and I felt witnessing her transformation was fulfilling.

My experience at Dress for Success opened my eyes to seeing the world through others' perspectives, strengthened my personal friendships through shared service, and deepened my commitment to responsible volunteerism. Most importantly, it showed me how helping women rediscover their beauty and worth creates ripples of positive change throughout our community.

By giving my time, I received so much more in return—a profound reminder that in empowering others, we often find ourselves equally transformed.
